Month-end close meant pulling numbers out of five different systems into one fragile spreadsheet, reconciling them by hand, and hoping nothing in the source systems changed while the file was still open. That's manageable when every account behaves. It breaks down the moment one system has a delayed sync or a duplicate entry, because there was no way to tell which of five hand-copied numbers was actually wrong.

The easy version of this keeps the spreadsheet as the system of record and just automates the copy-paste step into it — it's the smallest possible change and the fastest to ship. It also keeps the actual risk in place: a spreadsheet has no audit trail, so a wrong number is indistinguishable from a right one once it's pasted in. We built a proper reconciliation pipeline with the audit trail as a first-class feature instead, which took longer to build but means every number in the close can be traced back to the system it came from — the thing an auditor actually asks for.
